Report by India Education bureau, Bengaluru: This will go down as an unique face to face between the ancient and modern. When renowned humanitarian and founder of the Art of Living Sri Sri Ravi Shankar took to Facebook with a live event on Sunday, the modern social network turned into a lively global platform for seeking solace, guidance and action from the ancient Indian spiritual wisdom. Lakhs of people also participated in a meditation led by Sri Sri.

The interaction focused on issues ranging from love, relationships, maintaining faith in times of calamities, addictions, depression, success and societal violence. Live stream reported that 148 countries were logged in to chat for Face 2 Face with Sri Sri.

In his pragmatic style, Sri Sri offered solutions that were universal and farsighted.  To a question from a civil society group in Pakistan on how to eliminate terrorism from Pakistan, he emphasized the need for educating the masses about the oneness of the creation. “We are a one world family. Our first and foremost identity is that we are part of life. The rest of our identities are secondary,” he told.

On a question from a group of Art f Living volunteers engaged in relief missions in Uttarakhand on how to instill faith in people who have lost everything while on a pilgrimage, he advised them to see the calamities in a holistic way and keep faith. “God and Nature are always impartial. God is not only in Kedarnath; he is everywhere.” Sri Sri regretted that pilgrim centres in India have been neglected for long and emphasized on having a better infrastructure. He also voiced his concern on the negligence of environment at these places.

He shared how Art of Living volunteers have spontaneously responded to the situation, by rushing in all possible aids. “These are the times that test our humanness. We must extend our hand to those who need us.” He also lauded the effort of defence personnel and volunteers of other NGOs who are doing a tremendous work of providing relief and solace to stranded people.

Talking about social uprisings in different parts of the world, Sri Sri called for making non-violence as the guiding principle for any agitation and movement. “We need to see that the demonstrations are peaceful, because they are against a cause not a person.” he said responding to a question from Marcelo Freixo, Congressman from Brazil.

Questions poured in from various quarters of the globe from eminent people such as Monika Griefahn, Former Member of the German Parliament and co-founder of Greenpeace Germany;  Ricardo E Harvey, Coordinator of the program of Security, Corraentes, Argentina; Mrs. Shirin Ibrihem Fattah Amedi, secretary-general ofIraq,  Kurdish Women's Union and civil society members from countries like Korea, Turkey and Iran.

In several cities, people hosted local events to watch the programme in groups. “We have always seen Facebook as casual medium for fun and time pass. Today’s event made me realize it could well be a powerful tool for social transformation,” said Shweta Vyas, a viewer from Mumbai.

BANGALORE - This is undoubtedly going to be a page with no Unlike button! As the founder of The Art of Living, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar spiritualizes Facebook by turning it into a tool of meaningful dialogue for transformation, it will be 'liked' by over a million people across the globe both online and offline.

Mark the page of this electrifying event aimed at promoting his vision of creating a violence-free, stress-free society. The Face2Face event on Facebook with Sri Sri goes live 7.30pm to 9pm on June 23.

The idea is to make a global connection of responsible citizens, mainly youth who are willing to do their bit for peace and harmony. This is not the first time that Sri Sri is using social media networks to share and spread his vision for a “One World Family”. On January 26 this year, he used the platform of Google HangOut to reach out to millions across the globe with his call for volunteering for a better society. The electrifying event described as one of biggest online gatherings drew civil society members, artists, sportsmen, journalists, policy makers from countries like Oman, Taiwan, Paraguay, Zimbabwe, Slovenia, USA, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Argentina, Israel, India and Pakistan.

“Technology has shrunk the world into a global village and spirituality will turn it into a global family,” Sri Sri often says highlighting the synergy between technology and spirituality. Sri Sri is now making it happen by providing people in the technological space with a platform to participate in the spiritual pursuit of building a stress-free and violence-free world. “If we can get rid of the stress and anxiety, then the dream of a one world family is not far away,” he had remarked during the Google Hangout event.

"Social media such as Facebook are a very effective medium for connecting with youth of today. The efficacy of such medium will be enhanced when it's used by influential people like Sri Sri to energizethem for a good cause. Youth all over the world are restless to make their voices heard and do something to better the world. But often their energy ebbs, as there is no sense of direction. This Facebook event will help them find their own ways and means to contribute in building a better society. It will make them feel empowered," explained Uzair Khan, Media Rep, The Art of Living.

During the Facebook event, Sri Sri will answer questions from diverse topics of interest. The event will have four segments -- Sri Sri's personal life, Success and Creativity, Global Issues and Love and Relationships. Each segment will be peppered with interesting anecdotes, cartoon strips, video clips, etc. The event will also include an online-guidedmediation, whichis expected to be joined in by over 1 million people worldwide.

Participants can post their questions on the event page in Facebook, on the Art of Living website, or on Twitter with the hashtag #Ask SriSri. The best questions will be selected and grouped by a panel based on an online poll for the questions. The selected questions will be posed to Sri Sri by a host on behalf of the questioner during the event and there will be multiple moderators from around the world. The event can be viewed (like a webcast) on SriSri's Facebook page.

Lessons in leadership
Leadership is a manifestation of strong love and compassion for people. It represents a commitment to principles. In that sense, a certain degree of leadership is dormant in every individual. The challenge comes when one has to nurture it.

A true leader—whether political, religious or social—has many challenges to face. The capacity to express one’s commitment varies from individual to individual. It is often clogged by one’s likes and dislikes. Yet, a leader has to view everyone with the same outlook, appraise everyone with the same yardstick.

Tolerance is part of the Indian ethos: spiritual leader

Indian spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, 57, has millions of followers from all faiths around the world. Through his Art of Living Foundation and International Association for Human Values, he seeks to create a world free of stress and violence, alleviate human suffering, and foster shared global values. In an exclusive interview with Khabar South Asia, the "ambassador of peace" speaks about how to build a harmonious society and overcome hatred.

Khabar: How can peace, stability and brotherhood be promoted among people of all faiths in the world?

Sri Sri: There is need to impart and spread multi-religious, multi-cultural and multi-celebratory education. Normally, community celebrations are exclusive, but if the same becomes a universal phenomenon, this will reduce the gap and bring people of different communities closer to each other. Prejudice and one-upmanship among religions should be done away with. This can happen when a child is educated to honour all traditions, customs and life in general.

Religious leaders have a great role to play in bridging the gaps between communities. They should stop condemning other faiths, which often happens. There needs to be a definite balance in taking pride in one's culture and religion [while] at the same time, not putting others down.

Khabar: Does religion provide a basis for terrorism? Who is responsible for disorder and turbulence and what factors play roles in it?

Sri Sri: There are two types of terrorism. One is the red terror, caused by the communist regime/thinking, and the other is religious terror.

Religion has definitely played a major role in conflicts and wars. From time immemorial there are diverse ways of worshiping on this planet. Intolerance and proselytization are some of the worst things for a harmonious co-existence. Wrong indoctrination of scriptures, allurement of life hereafter and forgetting human values are some of the major causes of terrorism. Repeated brainwashing in the name of God and heaven to eliminate evil is another cause.

Khabar: India is a multicultural, multi-religious country. What are the responsibilities of religious leaders?

Sri Sri: Tolerance to other traditions is in-built in the Indian ethos. India, where 80% of the population is Hindu, is fortunate, as respecting other religions is in-built in the very philosophy. Here, I would say, one has to evolve from being religious to being spiritual, which is the specialty of India.

Extremism of any sorts should be avoided at all costs and we should not allow politicians to play vote bank politics ... Religious leaders, especially, from the minority community, should be cautious of political designs.

Khabar: What is common between India's Hindus and Muslims??

Sri Sri: Hindus and Muslims in India share a common heritage and culture. Though fundamentally there are big differences in the religions as such, in India it is much blurred... Even the 'Ibaadat' (worship) in 'dargah's (shrines) has a lot of similarities with Hinduism. Hindus on the other hand respect prophets and saints. Sufism is also an outcome of such influences.

Khabar: What is the role of religion in politics? Should politics be part of religion anyway?

Sri Sri: Ideally, religion and politics should be separate, but the ground reality is that every political party in India-- irrespective of their tall claims of promoting secularism-- does not exhibit that spirit. … Broad-based education with a scientific temperament, vibrant and dedicated leadership can change this vitiated atmosphere.

Khabar: We are facing hatred, tumult and disorder in the name of religion, region and sectarianism. What is the solution to all these problems?

Sri Sri: We have several identities. Human nature is to cling to an identity for survival; it is language, religion or caste. Here, one has to take a look at oneself, and identify oneself first and foremost to the one divinity by which and of which the whole creation is made. And the second identity is that of being a human being. And the third place should be for the gender. The fourth for nationality, the fifth could be of religion and so on--in this order. If this is misplaced, then it will lead to a problem.

Khabar: What is the role of religion in day to day life?

Sri Sri: Religion is supposed to provide much-needed inner strength, hope, courage and an insight to the life hereafter. Also, religion is a binding force which cuts across geographical and racial boundaries.

Usually religion is by birth and continues to influence till the end. Your name and all the ceremonies until your burial or cremation are determined by your religion. The communist effort of keeping religion away has not worked well either. Religion by itself is not bad-- contrary to communist thinking. It is the fanaticism and extremism that religion has given birth to that is dangerous to human society. You cannot avoid religion, but in spirituality you rise above and become a good human being.
