A Spiritual Angle to the Republic Day

You spend 9 months in your mother’s womb in privacy. The day you are born you become public. By the time you are 3 years old, you start getting enveloped in a sense of individuality and becoming a private person. You limit yourself with your likes and dislikes, draw boundaries between mine and others, start making a distinction of personal and public, and cling on to some identities. Most people live like that all their lives, in a dual world – one private and one public. You are something inside and something else on the outside.

When your outlook towards life broadens, you become like an open book. That is to say that your inner and outer worlds merge. When the distinction between me and others disappears, it is then that you become public. You have a sense of belonging with everyone and share all that you have. You have really become like a child again and that is when you have become re-public.

In a spiritual sense, Republic Day is an individual phenomenon, the ultimate blossoming.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Commences Maharashtra Tour

"When common people work together, problems get solved. I don't see society as rotten," said Sri Sri Ravi Shankar at a press conference on Saturday. "Yet, what India needs most urgently are clean, capable people to shoulder the four pillars of society – politics, media and entertainment, religion and business," he added.

The spiritualist spoke on the eve of the launch of his events in Maharashtra that aim to bring people together in peace. It will start with a mega-chanting event this evening (Sunday, January 11), and is open to all. It is to be held at the MMRDA ground, Bandra-Kurla Complex between 6 and 8 pm. This will be followed by a music event 'VenuNaad – Music for Peace' on Monday in Nashik, and will feature 4,000 flautists in ensemble led by Pandit Ronu Majumdar.

At the press conference, he also addressed a variety of topics, and specifically, about his organisation Art of Living's effort to bring people together in peace, both, in India and all over the world.

In a globe that is increasingly plagued by terrorism, Sri Sri highlighted AOL's recent efforts in Paris following the attack on Charlie Hebdo journalists.

He said that in the aftermath of a terrorist massacre, anger and fear are the two most predominant emotions. "We're conducting meditation camps in Paris and elsewhere in France because dealing with post-event trauma is the most important aspect for French citizens now," explained the spiritualist.

Asked to comment on Bollywood films, Sri Sri joked: "I don't take Bollywood films very seriously. Maybe because they usually portray spiritual people as villains."

He went on to say that what India needs now, is education that is broad based and also spiritual in nature; "Education that spreads peace and has breadth of vision," he added.

Regarding the youth whom he regards as a potent force for the future Sri Sri cautioned: "Youth today need to return to family values which they're moving away from, to their own detriment. Also, they tend to live in a virtual world when it is important to have real, living interactions. If they were to undertake 'seva' (social service), many of their problems would get sorted."

Finally, regarding the recent controversies in the media from politics and religion to business, he said that some people had figured that the best way to get some publicity is to stir up some controversy or the other. "Controversy is one way to establish a name, so people come up with controversies," he added.

Followers of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and spiritualists will be happy to know that a mega spiritual event has been planned for Sunday evening in Mumbai. Spiritual master Sri Sri Ravi Shankar will personally lead a chanting effort at the MMRDA ground in Bandra-Kurla Complex — We Chant with Sri Sri — which aims to promote peace and harmony. Over a lakh from city are expected to attend the event.

The event will be held between 6 PM and 8 PM and will be part of a worldwide marathon-chanting effort in which about 3 million people in 100 countries will be participating simultaneously. Held across several time zones, they will chant Sanskrit mantras, including Om Namah Shivaya, said Darshak Hathi, international director at the Art of Living.

"Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji's aim is to spread peace and happiness in every corner of the world. He travels to reach out to people with his message," added Hathi. The belief here is that positive vibrations and serenity in the environment will be an antidote to the large-scale violence and terror the world has been witnessing, most recently in Iraq and France.

This will be followed by a music event 'VenuNaad – Music for Peace' on Monday at 6 PM on the banks of river Godavari in Nashik. As Sri Sri Ravi Shankar says, "Spirituality and music together can uplift people, get them out of depression and help them start a new life with enthusiasm. For a stress-free life, you have to embrace both these facets — spirituality and music."
