Sri Sri Ravi Shankar pledges support to PLHIV

Online PR News – 28-September-2010 – Bangalore, (India), Sept. 27, 2010: 'Faith in Action 2010', a two-day summit addressing HIV-related stigma and discrimination, began today with the lamp-lighting ceremony by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder of the Art of Living Foundation along with Munisri Jinesh Kumarji, Sri Jain Shvetambar Terapanth Sabha, Avtar Singh Makkar , Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee, Golden Temple, Amritsar, Ervad Noshir Dadrawala, Centre of Advancement of Philanthrophy, Dryuhannon Mar Dios Corus, Metropolitan of Chennai, Syed Ghulam Kibria Dastagir, President, Anjuman Syed Zadjan, Ajmer Dargah Sharif, Swami Dharmavallabh Das, Swami Narayan Gurukul, His Holiness Phrakhrupipipsutatorn, AIMA, Thailand and Param Poojya Asaram Bapu. The first day of the summit saw the religious leaders taking a pledge to work tirelessly to remove all forms of stigma, discrimination, isolation and marginalization of people living with and affected by HIV.

The thoughts shared by people living with HIV/AIDS at the summit strengthen the fact that religious leaders play an inevitable role in fostering the process of reconciliation that is so urgently needed to bring families and communities divided by HIV AIDS back together.

'Political parties must stay away from Ayodhya issue'

Once nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, spiritual guru and Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar says though a court verdict on the Ayodhya issue seems inevitable, it is not sufficient for enduring peace unless there is give-and-take. The guru terms the CWG mess an "unpardonable" and says matters flared up in Kashmir after the present state government came to power. Excerpts from an interview with Vivek Sinha:

The country is awaiting the Ayodya verdict. Can a court verdict in a matter of faith lead to a lasting solution?

When the talks broke down between the two groups, they had no other recourse than to go to court. Several attempts were made, but there was adamancy and lack of trust between the two parties. Court had to play a role. For any talks to succeed, there should be a give-and-take. It cannot happen by tu-tu-main-main. Political parties must stay away and let religious leaders decide the issue.

A Must Read For All Of Us In The AOL

Michael Fishman's book, Stumbling into Infinity, is a definite must read for all of us seekers. Michael, President of Art of Living USA, bares his soul and speaks about his own personal journey to find God and his purpose in life and Sri Sri's role in shaping the person he is today. He does not offer himself to any of us as a perfected soul but one who is constantly evaluating himself and adjusting to getting his perception, observation and expression right. He was blunt on the criticisms of himself by his peers and even Guruji's and achingly tells of how his own personal desires warred with his desire to serve Sri Sri and his humiliating experiences.

Guruji's unconditional love and care for Michael and each of us is conveyed so beautifully in his messages in this book. Intensely beautiful with so much love that it is unbelievable. I found Michael's recount intensely emotional and wrenching while there are moments when the hilarity stuns. Michael has fulfilled Guruji's wish to have his experiences written to benefit others and it could not have come at a better moment in my own personal journey. I look forward to part 2 of this book which may not come for many more years when Michael fully understands the journey he has been on. But the best part of this is Michael does not offer himself to any of us as a perfect Teacher or perfect human being. There is so much each of us can learn from this book. I would recommend this to everyone.

Love and Jai Guru Deva

'Get back to beauty and power that is within'

Russia, Sept. 5:

When we become like children, then we realize that we have greater power. It is within each and everyone. Realizing this, is most beautiful. Beauty is not in clothes. It is in the inner quality. Appearance is beautiful, but if anger, jealously or greed finds a place, then it reflects in the personality, and all the beauty is lost.

How to get back to that beauty that we are born with? Go anywhere, to the North, South, West or East, one finds every child beautiful. Children radiate joy and love. As we become adults, we learn skills and gain abilities but we somewhere miss maintaining the inner beauty, that spark of love in our life. Can we maintain those powerful skills and yet retain that beauty we were born with? I would say yes, that is what The Art of Living is all about - Making life a celebration; dream about a stress-free, violence-free society, disease-free body, confusion-free mind and sorrow-free soul. Tell me who doesn't want all this? It is possible. In the last 30 years of The Art of Living, we have seen that everybody needs love in every corner of this planet. And that is what we spread.

Talking about this Russian tour, I feel absolutely at home. Nice people here. I want this sweetness to be maintained. But we see it is disappearing in the younger generation.

There is more stress accumulating in youth, and we need to see that our younger generation is free from stress and depression. The World Health Organization says that 30 percent of Europe is suffering from depression! Let us all take commitment that we will not let it happen. We want to see a happy world. I want every tear to be turned into a smile. That is why all this yoga, pranayama and kriya are so important to relieve this stress. In the ballet, we observe the whole body can balance on the toes. One leg in the air and one firm on the ground makes the dance. A solid material and spiritual foundation makes a dance. Spiritual experience is having one foot in the air and the other firm. That balance is power. We find ourselves in trouble when we lose this balance.

The ancient spirituality always united people of all cultures and religions. Don't you think this is what we need today? In the name of religion, so many wars and terrorism are coming into picture. One solution is that everyone gets back to spirituality. Get back to beauty and power that is within. We communicate much more through our presence than the words. I have said all that I want to say.

Learning about power of silence..

A DIFFERENT SPIN By JO-JO STRUYS

A meeting with Guruji becomes a timely reminder on not going too fast in life... (Friday, September 3, 2010)

WHEN I was flipping through The Star a few weeks ago, an article written by T. Selva on "Sweet Silence" caught my attention.

At the time, I was yelling at my three dogs to stop barking because someone was at the door and my phone was ringing while I was in the midst of sending a Twitter message.

I remember thinking what a terrible example I was of "sweet silence".

I've read countless books on how important it is to silence the mind because living in a world surrounded by noise and constant stress can overtax our bodies and drain our creative energies.

In the midst of a manic film schedule, I was intrigued by the impending visit of a famous Indian guru called Sri Ravi Shankar (also referred to as Guruji).

He is the founder of the Art of Living Foundation, which aims at relieving both individual stress and societal problems and violence.

Today, the Art of Living Foundation is the world's largest volunteer-based non-governmental organisation.

It has touched more than 20 million people from all walks of life.

The Guruji has also been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

Here's the odd part. I was at The Star two days later and by sheer coincidence, I ran into Selva.

He gave me the contact information I required and said if I was meant to meet the Guruji, it would happen.

As it turned out, I missed the seminar in Kuala Lumpur but the Guruji was scheduled to visit Penang.

An incredible 13,000 people showed up to get a glimpse of him and to hear his words of wisdom.

In attendance during his one-hour talk was Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

I was actually in Penang at that time to film my new food show. I couldn't believe my luck!

I ended up having a private audience with him and...

Message from Guruji:

A Time to go Inwards

Guruji has indicated that the next few months, upto around the middle of October are not so good and He has advised that we keep three things in mind

1. No adventure trips at all. No trekking, rafting, mountain climbing, etc

2. Cut down on partying and night outs

3. Drive slowly, carefully and don’t leave your house till you have finished your Sadhana

For these few weeks, please be more sattwic, eat at home more, not outside as much as possible…

What i see in this, is it’s an opportunity for all of us to go more inwards. Clean up our life and start up some really good habits.Do all your Sadhana, Surya Namaskars, Padma Sadhana, Sudarshan Kriya, Sahaj. Also do chanting, Om Namah Shivaya(for 11 minutes) and the Guru Pooja if you know it.

Start to read the Bhagavad Geeta and the Yoga Vasishtha … You know you have been wanting to do it, instead of that trek, sit home and read these books. Doesn’t matter if you don’t understand or it is too deep for you, just reading will open something up in you… Read these books just after meditation.

Go Inwards.

Be safe…

Jai Gurudev!!!

Janamashtami: A new perspective

Janamashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna. Ashtami is significant as it indicates a perfect balance between the seen and the unseen aspects of reality; the visible material world and the invisible spiritual realm.

Krishna's birth on Ashtami signifies his mastery of both the spiritual and material worlds. He is a great teacher and a spiritual inspiration as well as the consummate politician. On one hand, he is Yogeshwara (the Lord of Yogas — the state to which every yogi aspires) while on the other, he is a thief.

The unique quality of Krishna is that he is at once more pious than the saints and yet a thorough mischief-monger! His behaviour is a perfect balance of the extremes — perhaps this is why the personality of Krishna is so difficult to fathom. The avdhoot is oblivious to the world outside and a materialistic person, a politician or a king is oblivious to the spiritual world. But Krishna is both Dwarkadheesh and Yogeshwar.

Krishna's teachings are most relevant to our times in the sense that they neither let you get lost in material pursuits nor make you completely withdrawn. They rekindle your life, from being a burnt-out and stressed personality to a more centred and dynamic one. Krishna teaches us devotion with skill. To celebrate Gokulashtami is to imbibe extremely opposite yet compatible qualities and manifest them in your own life.

Hence the most authentic way of celebrating Janamashtami is knowing that you have to play a dual role — of being a responsible citizen of the nation and at the same time to realise that you are above all events, the untouched Brahman. Imbibing a bit of avadhoot and a bit of activism in your life is the real significance of celebrating Janamashtami.

- Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Let Out the Steam, and Get Into the Team
(Guruji's article in the Moscow Times)

I believe that the starting point for leaders is the boardroom, the office. To create an atmosphere of celebration, you need the right attitude, and you have to bring in that attitude yourself. This may require some form of teamwork. An atmosphere of celebration, of trust, cooperation and a sense of belonging, all have to come. I have no doubt that there is a willingness among people to refresh themselves; they just need to have it put in front of them in an effective, viable way. They need to be given the opportunity.

A business will not last if it focuses only on productivity and net result. The company ultimately suffers because the creativity, the strength and the sense of belonging will ebb away. Similarly, the military "command and control" system no longer works. Only inspiration and motivation are effective tools. For that, one can apply some of the ancient principles from different parts of the world in the workplace, to make the work more enjoyable.

In the past, the business world ran on economic pressure, because people had no other means. But today, the global market is very open, and the choices are many and varied. People are more aware than a few years ago, so now they want to move around. Previously business was regionally oriented, because job availability was limited and people were stuck with the job they had. But now, if people are not satisfied at work, they will find a new, better job and move elsewhere. This has turned the business view completely upside down.

One of our program components has the slogan, "Let out the steam, and get into the team." In other words, take off your management hat and sit with others in your company. Sit and talk to them and share your point of view. This type of interaction is an education. It empowers people and facilitates cooperation. This can be combined with breathing techniques and exercises, where participants independently eradicate feelings of stress and take a fresh look at the situation.

Any business needs intuition, and successful business is directly proportional to the intuition of the boss. Greater intuition translates into greater business success: If your intuition is wrong,
