Achieving Balance With Ayurveda: Sri Sri

Posted on: Monday, February 27, 2012 | Posted by: Art of Living Universe

 Huffingtonpost, Sri Sri.
Life has four characteristics -- it exists, evolves, expresses and extinguishes. For this, it depends on five elements, namely earth, water, air, ether and fire. To make it easier to understand we can bring in the five senses and its objects, namely sight, smell, taste, sound and touch.

Ayurveda is the study of life. Ayur is life and Ved means to know. According to Ayurveda, life or existence is not a rigid compartment, but a harmonious flow. Even the five elements of which the whole universe is made of are not tight compartments of defined objects. They flow into one another. Each one of the elements contains the other four.

The subtlest element in us is space, which the mind is made up of, and the grossest is the earth element, which our bones, marrow, the skin and the structure are made of. This is further divided into three Doshas -- Vata, Pitta and Kapha. This is a way to understand our physiology, its characteristics and its reflection on the mind.

When an illness arises, it comes first in the thought form, the subtlest aspect, then the sound form, and then the light form, which is in the aura. It is only then that the illness manifests in the body. Simple symptoms arise in the fluid form, which can be eradicated, and then it manifests in the grossest form, where it needs medication. But with the practice of Ayurveda, the illness can be nipped in the bud.

The holistic approach of Ayurveda includes exercise, breathing and meditation. Breath is synonymous to life. Our life is our breath. Our breath is our life. It is very interesting to observe the relationship between breath and the different Doshas in the body, namely Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These three Doshas affect certain parts of the body more than the other parts.

For example, Vata Dosha is predominant in the lower part of the body -- stomach, intestine, etc. Diseases like gastric problems and joint aches can be due to the Vata imbalance. Kapha dosha is predominant in the middle part of the body. Cough is mainly a result of Kapha imbalance. And Pitta affects the upper part of the body -- the head. Short temper is a sign of Pitta.

Yoga and breathing techniques such as Sudarshan Kriya and the pranayama (channelizing prana or life force to different parts of the body) have an effect on these three Doshas, bringing balance to the system.

Among different pranayama and other breathing techniques, there are specific breathing exercises for the lower, middle and the upper parts of the body, which help bring balance to the respective areas.

How do we bring good health to our system? The first remedy is calming the mind, coming from the subtlest aspect of creation, the ether. If your mind is bottled with too many impressions and thoughts, and it is draining you of your resistance power, that is where it is preparing your body for some illness. If the mind is clear, calm, meditative, and pleasant, the resistance in the body will increase and it will not allow an illness to come into it. The skillful use of breath and meditation can calm the mind.

Then comes the air element. Breathing, aromatherapy, etc., come in this category. Next is the light element, wherein color therapy is used to heal. Before an illness manifests in the body, you can see it in the aura of a person. And by energizing our system with the prana or life energy one can clear the aura and prevent the illness.

Next is the water element. Fasting or purifying the system with water can bring a lot of balance in the system.

The final recourse would be medicines, medicinal herbs and surgery. All these come in when other things fail and the illness becomes inevitable.

The practice of Ayurveda can truly enhance the quality of your life.

Amarnath Board accepts Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Committee recommendations

New Delhi/Jammu, February 25 (Scoop News) - N. N. Vohra, Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, who is the Chairman of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, chaired the 3-1/2 hour long meeting of the Board which was held here yesterday.

The meeting was attended by all the Board Members Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan, Justice (Retd.) G. D. Sharma, Dr. (Ms.) Sunita Narayan, Shri Vijay Dhar, Pt. Bhajan Sopori and Dr. (Prof.) Ved Kumari Ghai. Besides, Shri R. K. Goyal, Chief Executive Officer and Shri Preet Pal Singh, Additional Chief Executive Officer of the Shrine Board also attended the meeting.

The Board noted that a growingly large number of pilgrims had been losing their lives during the annual Shri Amarnathji pilgrimage, particularly due to cardiac related ailments. It was further noted that 45, 68 and 107 persons had lost their lives in the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Yatras, respectively. Taking note of the loss of precious lives during the annual Yatras, the Shrine Board had decided, in 2010, that every pilgrim seeking Registration for undertaking the Yatra must be fully aware of the serious risk involved in the pilgrimage and must self certify that he/she possessed satisfactory health status to be able to undergo the Yatra. This decision did not yield the envisaged outcome, as the vast majority of the Yatris do not pay heed to the Health Advisories issued by the Shrine Board. In this context, the Board observed that time had come to consider a more effective approach and decided that every person seeking Registration to undertake the Yatra must furnish a Health Certificate issued by a Registered Medical Practitioner (RMP). The Board noted that the enforcement of such a pre-condition had also been advised by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The Board directed that the C.E.O. should issue a very clear Advisory to inform every intending Yatri to undergo a medical check-up to assess his/her fitness for undertaking the arduous Yatra. The Board desired that the CEO should generate the required awareness through release of appropriate informative features, both in the print and electronic media, for several weeks running before the Yatra begins. In this context, the Board appealed to all sections of the media to provide whole hearted support for enhancing adequate awareness of the arduous nature of the Yatra among the people at large. The Board directed that the Registration process should commence well ahead of the commencement date of the Yatra.

Regarding the date of commencement of the Yatra 2012, the Board held extended deliberations on the recommendations of the Board’s sub-Committee chaired by H. H. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, which had been set up in July 2011 to advise the Board regarding the duration and schedule of the Yatra in 2012 and beyond. This sub-Committee, which was set up by the Board consequent to an agreement reached with BABA Yatri Niyas in June 2011, comprised Swami Avdheshanandji of Haridwar, Swami Gyaanandji of Vrindavan, Shri Y. V. Sharma, President, Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Jammu, Shri R. L. Bharti, formerly Member, J&K Public Service Commission, Shri Prem Gupta, IPS (Retd.), formerly Inspector General of Police, Jammu, Dr. C.M. Raina, Asstt. Professor, Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, Jammu, and Shri R. K. Goyal, CEO of the Shrine Board as the Member-Secretary.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar briefed the Board about the modalities adopted by his sub-Committee to finalize its recommendations. Regarding the duration and schedule of the Yatra 2012, the Board took note of the fact that whereas in 2011 Shravan Purnima/ Raksha Bandhan fell on 13th August, it falls on 2ndAugust in 2012. The Board also noted that during the 2010 and 2011 Yatras, despite vigorous efforts to carry out snow clearance operations on the Chandanwari–Sheshnag–MG Top–Panjtarni–Holy Cave axis, this route could become fit for movement only around end June. It was also recalled that during Yatra 2009, despite sustained efforts to clear the snow tracks, the Yatris had faced severe difficulties for the initial 10-12 days, particularly on the Chandanwari route. The Board also noted that the annual schedule of the Yatra in the past 15 years had varied from 15 to 60 days and that about 85% of the pilgrims are in a rush to complete the Yatra within the initial 25-30 days from the commencement of the pilgrimage.

Consequent to detailed deliberations, the Board accepted the recommendations of the H.H. Ravi Shankar sub-Committee and directed the CEO of the Board to timely commence the registration of pilgrims and ensure the effective management of the Yatra which would commence on 25th June and conclude on Raksha Bandhan on 2nd August. The Shrine Board further decided that the CEO should arrange a Special Pooja on the day of Jyestha Purnima, which falls on 4th June this year. This Pooja shall, if possible, take place at the Holy Cave or at any other suitable location in the Yatra area, to invoke the blessings of Lord Shiva for the safe and smooth conduct of the pilgrimage. The Board further directed that all possible efforts should be made, in coordination with all concerned agencies, to make a timely assessment to determine whether it would be feasible to consider advancing the Yatra by a few days, prior to 25th June. For this purpose, a specific review of the status of the snow melt and the pace of the snow clearing work would be undertaken in the first week of June this year. It was further resolved that if preponement before 25th June is found possible, even by a few days, the CEO shall organize registration of Yatris through a speedy mode like e.g. on-line or even spot-registration.

The Board expressed its gratitude to H. H. Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji, and other members of his sub-Committee, for the detailed work done and the comprehensive recommendations presented to the Board, covering varied aspects of the Yatra management.

Will Continue Crusade Against Black Money, Says Ravishankar

Posted on: Friday, February 24, 2012 | Posted by: Art of Living Universe

Spiritual leader and founder of Art of Living Sri Sri Ravishankar on Thursday said he would continue the crusade against corruption and black money.

Reiterating his commitment to the fight against corruption in public life, he said “We will continue our crusade to bring back the Rs 24 lakh crore black money kept in foreign banks.”

Referring to his recent visit to Sri Lanka, Ravishankar told reporters the Art of Living was now teaching ‘dhyanam’ to more than one lakh Tamils in the island nation to relieve their mental stress.

Welcoming the change of Government in Tamil Nadu in 2011, he expressed hope that the present government will continue to work for the welfare of the poor.

Inaugurating a multi-purpose community centre at Sri Vidhya Mandir campus in Anaikoil village, he said the centre had been constructed at a cost of Rs 50 lakh jointly by the International Association for Human Values (IAHV) and Sri Balaji Temple Trust, Chicago.

He said the present education system was not making the youth employable and felt that job-oriented education system was the need of the hour.

The Vidya Mandir was established by IAHV for benefit of the tsunami survivors in Tarangambadi taluk. Nagapattinam District Collector T Munusamy participated.

Earlier, Ravishankar visited Lord Saneeswara temple at Tirunallar in Karaikal district and offered worship.

He also participated in a mega event ‘Anbin Sangamam’ at Nehru stadium in Karaikal which brought together, music, Knowledge and meditation on one platform.

A new hero's born as Plim Plim flies high

Posted on: Tuesday, February 21, 2012 | Posted by: Art of Living Universe

 DNA, Feb 21, 2012.
When Sri Sri Ravi Shankar penned the Universal Declaration of Human Values and presented it in the United Nations a few years ago, he could hardly have imagined that his teachings would inspire two Argentina-based media professionals to create an animated series for television.

“Guruji said it was necessary that a new hero was born — a hero who should leave behind violence and embrace the flag of human values,” Claudio Pousada, the director of the series, told DNA recently. “So Plim Plim the Clown, A Hero of the Heart was born, with those characteristics. Each chapter is based on the Declaration of Human Values. Additionally, every character represents the layers of existence as Sri Sri has described it.”

Pousada is currently in India hoping to bring the series to Indian audiences.

Plim Plim is being aired in 22 countries in Latin America.

“It caters to children between the age of two and six, and enjoys the highest ratings in this age group. It is also popular with parents, since it focusses on values such as co-operation, solidarity, friendship, and caring for the planet in a way that is both funny and inspiring,” he said.

The series has several characters based on African, American, European, Indian and Chinese values. The protagonist, Plim Plim, is a generous, brave and enthusiastic five-year-old boy with the characteristics of a clown, a hero and a magician. The different episodes highlight varied themes like respect, honesty and responsibility.

Pousada, who has been helped in his endeavour by his partner Guillermo Pino, explained that the stories were narrated like fables and there was no pontification involved.

“Plim Plim promotes good values through example and not through preaching,” he said.

The creators also believe that there is a double advantage where their product is concerned. “On one hand, there is wholesome entertainment for children and, on the other hand, the series provides support and collaboration from adults,” Pousada added.

Rouse Yourself Awake Tonight

Posted on: Monday, February 20, 2012 | Posted by: Art of Living Universe

Discourse by His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
Shivaratri is taking refuge in Shiva. And Shiva is peace, infinity, beauty and the non-dual one. You take refuge in Shiva for your true nature is Shiva as he is the meditative aspect of the entire Universe.

Albert Einstein proved that energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it can only be changed from one form to another. That energy, which changes from one form to another, is called Shiva.

Shiva is that blissful and innocent consciousness which exists in every atom of the universe and also in us. Celebrating the Shiva tattva in oneself is called Shivaratri. ‘Ratri’ means night, the time for rest and comfort. When all activities stop and everything becomes quiet and peaceful, the body goes to sleep. Shivaratri is a rest not only for the body, but also for the mind, intellect and ego.

Paradoxically, ‘Shiva Tattva’ also means to be awakened. Shivaratri is thus an occasion to awaken from all sorts of slumber. It is not a night to be slept through but one to remain awake in. It signifies being aware of everything you have and being grateful for it. Be grateful for the happiness which has led to growth and also for sadness which gives depth to life. This is the right way of observing Shivaratri.

The meaning of Kailasa, the abode of Shiva, is celebration. Whether in sanyasa or samsara, you cannot escape Shiva for wherever there is celebration there is Shiva. Feeling his presence all the time is the essence of Shivaratri. That is the real sanyasa. No worship is complete without offering something to the deity. Shiva is very simple; he is innocent, hence he is called Bholanath. One just needs to offer bel-patra to him. There’s a deep message here. Bel-patra offerings signify the surrender of all three aspects of one's nature – tamas, rajas and sattva. You have to surrender the positives and negatives of your life to Shiva and become carefree.
The greatest offering is yourself. To do so is the key to happiness in life. After all, why do you get sad? It is mainly because you are not able to achieve something in life. At such times you should surrender everything to the all-knowing God. The greatest power is in surrender to the Divine. It is like a drop owning the ocean. If a drop remains separate, it will perish. But when it becomes the ocean, it is eternal.

Shivam, Shantam, Advaitam: Shiva means your very Self, your innermost core, the purest Self. Shanta is quiet, peaceful, very innocent. Advaita is non-dual, where there is only One. So, Shiva means good and benevolent and Ratri means that which gives rest, which takes you into its lap and gives comfort.

Shivaratri is a rest which is so deep that the mind rests with the Divine. Any meditation we do on this day has a manifold effect, for this is the day when spirit touches the earth. If you meditate on Shivaratri then the power of meditation is 100 times more. So, that which is always, nitya and which is, shashwat, that is Shiva Tattva.

It's said beautifully in the shloka: "Namamishamishaan nirvana rupam, vibhumvyapakam brahma vedaswaroopam."
Shivaratri is the transcendental, divine peace which brings solace to all layers of existence. Resting in Shiva Tattva is called Shivaratri. There are certain days and time frames in a year that enhance one's mental and spiritual faculties. In such times whatever one wishes, materialises. Shivaratri is one such precious day.

Beauty and Luck: Sri Sri

Posted on: Friday, February 17, 2012 | Posted by: Art of Living Universe

Often, we mistake pride for arrogance and those who have arrogance mistake it for pride. But there is a clear distinction. Arrogance is being insensitive. When there is no humility in pride, that pride turns into arrogance. When there is no awareness in pride, that pride turns into arrogance. When there is no love or service along with pride, that pride turns into arrogance. It is the same knife. With just a little twist to it, you can either cut your butter or hurt your finger. Arrogance goes with the small mind. The small mind, being unaware of the magnitude of existence, thinks it is the greatest, the biggest, the highest.

Pride brings joy and in joy there is pride, but if you become insensitive, you get lost in your joy and pride. Pride accompanied by humility brings awareness of goodness, of beauty, of one's luck, of one's heart. Luck is a language of the heart. When the heart says, "lucky" or "unlucky", it is referring to something that is beyond one's capacity, beyond one's mind, beyond one's abilities. Something that is beyond the smallness of mind, something that is out of reach, something that is enormous, you call luck. Isn't it?

The mind or head knows only facts, while the heart makes everything big. Poetry comes out of the heart. Poetry is exaggeration, and beauty is nothing but exaggeration. There is no fact in beauty. If you try to analyze beauty from your mind, the beauty is gone. Beauty is a language of the heart. The heart decorates, elaborates, exaggerates. When you read a poem, when you sing a song, when you describe something beautiful, it's always from the heart. Justice is from the head. A quality comes from the head. From the heart comes only uniqueness, specialty. Everything is made special from the heart, but often we get it backward. If there is some negativity, we deal with it from the heart and if something is positive, we say it goes to our head.

We exaggerate problems. If a mistake has been made or there is some suffering, some misery, we blow it up beyond its dimensions. If a few people get sick in town, we say, "Everyone in town is sick. Everyone is always sick here." We exaggerate and eternalize. Many newspapers thrive on this exaggerated negativity, but if something beautiful happens, they say, "Let's see the facts." They want to look at it from their head rather than through the heart. We do the same thing, don't we? We need to switch it around. When you see the negative quality in someone, analyze it. Why is this person being so negative? What is behind it? What does he want? Reason it out. Don't see negativity through the heart because then your heart becomes sore. Analysis of negativity brings compassion in you. An exaggeration of some good brings waves of beauty in you.

You have to take a step to make this shift. If you see one beautiful quality in another person, decorate it, exaggerate it, make it big. Whether the person is beautiful or not is immaterial. Those who exaggerate positive qualities become positive themselves because our body, which is nothing but space, gets filled with praise.

You have heard the phrase, "Praise the name of the Lord." You are asked to do it not because God is going to be greater because of your praise or some person will become great because of your praise. No. In the act of praising, you become beautiful.

Whenever you have felt a sense of great beauty, that is when you have reached your home, that is when you have been in touch with your Self, because you are so, so beautiful. Whatever beauty you see in the world is only a projection of the being, of the Self -- a glimpse of the Self. Meditation helps you see the beauty within and the beauty outside.

When you rejoice in beauty, the entire creation rejoices with you. The very purpose of such variety in this creation is to bring you back to your Self, to come to know that you are beautiful. And in that bliss, all that you need, all that you would want will simply keep happening.

Two steps to enlightenment

Posted on: Sunday, February 12, 2012 | Posted by: Art of Living Universe

Enlightenment or evolution has got two steps. The first step is from becoming somebody to nobody. It is not getting stuck in something or somebody. You get stuck being somebody in two cases - either you are too special or you are hopeless. People get stuck in the seat. If you don't give them a proper seat, that's it. That pushes their button. “What difference does it make if I sit on the sofa or on the carpet? I remain what I am.” Meditation is from being somebody to becoming nobody. Dissolving of ego is from somebody to nobody.

The second step is from nobody to everybody. That is the state where you feel oneness with everybody, you feel that you are a part of everyone and everyone is a part of you. That is the reason why Jesus said, "If you have to go to my Father, there is no other way, you have to go through me and me alone." Krishna said the same thing to Arjuna. He addresses him in three terms. First he says, "Surrender to Him who lives in everybody's heart". Then he says, "Just surrender to me." And then he says, "Surrender to that divinity that is deep in yourself and get out of this illusion of ‘me’ and ‘you’ and all the separation.”

The whole universe is one organism, one living Being. And each mind is just a part of that. This is the highest knowledge, the universal truth. You are in everybody. Only then the real service also begins. That service is really authentic. You see someone suffering and you feel you are suffering too or you see somebody getting hurt, and you also feel the pain.

See, the body is decaying. Whatever you do, your body is perishable. The direction of body is towards perishing, is towards decay. And the direction of your soul should be towards the immortal, the non-changing, imperishable. As you grow older, your mind should mature and look towards that eternal something that is undying, that doesn't age. That is deep in you: the spirit.

There is so much suffering in the world and that's why we need to be very active in giving this knowledge to as many people as possible. You can. All those who have learned meditation, and all those who have not learned meditation also, just get together, do some reading and satsang, meditate together, eat together; share lives together. Once in fifteen days, once in a month, have a sort of community get-together. And talk about knowledge. Instead of gossiping or talking something just trivial, why not talk about knowledge, wisdom? Putting your mind into something that is eternal is worth doing.

We need to improve the quality of life. Just look at the children when they are in kindergarten, in nursery school; there is so much joy, there is so much happiness, celebration in their life. And, as they grow older, when they go to high school, see how they are? Do they grow in joy, in bliss, in celebration, or are they going towards violence, hatred, unfriendly behavior, stress, frustration, agitation and dullness? Is this what we are doing to the children? And we spend thousands of dollars to bring this suffering on to them. And this we call as education? Losing all the human qualities is called education! That's ridiculous, no?

And this is not an instance here and there. This is widespread, nearly the same all over the globe. Maybe not so much in developing countries but especially in all the developed countries and metropolitan cities - there is absolutely no human quality at all being expressed. I wouldn't say they have died out. They are there but are never expressed. So there is such frustration, such pain, such suffering all over and we need to do something about it.
