BANGALORE: Every Indian must dedicate one hour to the nation every day. This was the message of the volunteer movement launched by the Art of Living (AOL) Foundation on Sunday.

Two projects, rejuvenation of Kumudavathi River in Bangalore Rural, and enrolment of 10,000 youngsters from 150 colleges in electoral rolls, were launched as 4,000-strong crowd cheered on. While the audience chanted Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's name, the spiritual leader simultaneously launched the movement at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi.

"We can't work amidst corruption. People - especially women, children, artistes, dalits, minority communities and others - don't feel secure in the country. We need to get to the root of the problem and fix it," said Sri Sri, on a live telecast from New Delhi.

"Anger is essential to wake us up. But if we are angry without the right attitude and action plan, anger will burn us. It needs to be channelized. You give one hour every day to better the country. Don't give this one hour from your study time but from your entertainment time," he added.

Hearing the speech, an inspired Sri Kumar (37) said: "I plan to spread awareness against the ill-effects of alcohol through street plays and by reaching out to students and slum residents."

Mansi Dharmraj, 28, said: "I want to teach local children in JP Nagar."
