Spiritual leader and founder of the Art of Living Foundation, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, has urged the Tamil Nadu and Indian governments to accord Indian citizenship to the Sri Lankan Tamil refugees lodged in various refugee camps.

Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, Ravi Shankar, who was here to address the International Yoga Festival, said it was a pity that the Lankan Tamils were treated as second class citizens. Many refugees and immigrants are given citizenship in India. Recently 51 people from Pakistan were given citizenship, he said. At the same time, the Sri Lankan Tamil refugees continue to lead a miserable life in the refugee camps in the State, he pointed out.

He said the Art of Living Foundation, which had collected 10 lakh signatures seeking according citizenship to those who wished to live here, would soon meet the President and submit a memorandum, pressing the demands.

Further, he said The Art of Living has taken up a campaign to integrate the nation through the patriotic songs of Mahakavi Bharathiar. It will start in Coimbatore from January 30 and the campaign will be taken to all villages in Tamil Nadu.
