"I don't want people to exercise the NOTA option during voting. I want them to vote decisively," said Sri Sri Ravi Shankar at a press interaction on Friday. The spiritual guru is in the city as part of his four-day tour of the state to encourage people to come out and vote.

Stressing upon the compulsion of having a strong government at the centre and not a coalition, Sri Sri said the nation is hurtling towards disaster. "The country is on a ventilator. We can't just sit and watch. We have to educate people to vote for betterment and progress," he said. The spiritual guru, who has covered 518 villages in Vidarbha, said there was a need to boost the moral of farmers. "The recent hailstorms in Buldhana and other districts have devastated them. I feel spiritual figures can provide a healing touch."

Justifying the need for spiritual gurus to dabble in politics, he said, "Had the country not plunged to such depths, we would not have interfered with politics. It is the silence of the good that destroys a country."

Equating patriotism with devotion, Sri Sri added, "We only put the truth before the people and encourage them to follow the right path. As a founder of India Against Corruption (IAC), I have seen an eagerness and enthusiasm for change. This provides a glimmer of hope."

Stressing upon the need to keep away the corrupt and criminal from governance, he said, "Threatening opponents and hurling insults is not a fair game. Criminals get tickets as they have vote banks. I feel more than the legal system it is spiritual healing which our country needs today." The guru also advised the electorate to think twice before voting for novices. "The country is in no shape to experiment. The first timers should first pass the test by governing local bodies."

Terming the economy precarious, the spiritual leader said a weak government will lead to uncontrolled inflation. "The dollar rupee rate will rise to Rs100 unless a strong government is voted in. The image of the country has taken a tremendous beating after Nirbhaya episode. There has been a 30% fall in the number of female tourists visiting the country."
