To that India which dreams and dares

Posted on: Friday, January 27, 2012 | Posted by: Art of Living Universe

Despite rising threats of religious terrorism, Naxalism and natural disasters, India is moving ahead. What makes India tick? India was born in the midst of religious strife, violence and trauma. Religion has never been a unifying force in the world. What accounts for India’s continued strength in the midst of such religious and cultural diversity?

In this century, China has been held together by force while India has been held together by cultural and spiritual bonding. Though religious fundamentalism, caste violence, Naxalism and natural disasters have rocked India in recent decades, the country's resilience that is anchored in her spiritual values has become far more visible in the world.
India is married to its principles: liberty, spirituality and a nationalism that honours universalism. It is one of the oldest civilisations on the planet. When America was not yet discovered and Europe was in its Dark Age, India's glory was widespread. It was famed for art, architecture, spirituality and trade.

Over the centuries, the country has faced and survived many challenges. On the one hand, India has touched pinnacles of justice and equality, on the other Dalits have been oppressed. India is a country of non-aggressive, humane people, yet practices such as sati have prevailed. It is very difficult to judge India. There is no midway: either people have a high opinion or low opinion about India because it is full of opposites.
For centuries, India's negative aspects have been projected over the good ones. Fortunately, that's changing. As a country, divided by language and caste and subjected to centuries of humiliation, it continues to reel in low self esteem. Like an elephant that can uproot trees but is scared of the mahout's small stick, India can be timid at times. Even the West has called it a sleeping giant.

With one sixth of the world’s population, she could have already played a bigger role. She now needs to take her rightful place on the world stage. For this to happen, her people need to become more confident and take greater pride in their cultural and spiritual roots. We have to harness our spiritual values to fight terrorism and other social evils and to prevent our young minds from turning to violence. The issue of Naxalism has to be addressed at its roots and the misguided youth should be brought back to the mainstream. We have to remain open to learning and innovation, rather than simply imitating Western consumer and material values.

Today, we need to take steps towards:

1. Providing Job-oriented education.

2. Eradicating politics of corruption and malpractice.

3. Encouraging the educated and the youth to take interest in social development.

4. Attending to the agricultural sector. While industry has flourished, agriculture has been totally neglected.

5. Improving basic hygiene,

6. Preventing female infanticide and

7. Ensuring judicial use of water resources.

As the population continues to grow, solutions to these problems are still a long way away. The wisdom, which was India's glory, has been almost forgotten and needs to be revived.
We should work for an India where there is no place for violence and terror, the poor have both relief and justice, the middle class is free from fear and frustration and is able to dream and to dare, and the affluent take social responsibility and uphold human values. Let us hope for an India which is able to take the best of its wisdom and traditions into the 21st century, both for the benefit of ourselves and for the whole world family.

Keep Patna clean, Sri Sri exhorts devotees

Posted on: Tuesday, January 24, 2012 | Posted by: Art of Living Universe

PATNA: Naxals are brave people and are doing 'tapasya' in jungle. They are fighting to make India free of inequality and poverty, Art of Living (AoL) founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said here on Sunday.

"Like you, I also want India to be free from poverty, corruption, casteism and disparity. But I do not support your (read Maoist) ways to achieve these goals. Your ways are wrong," Sri Sri said at the satsang organized by AOL at the veterinary college ground here on Sunday. The satsang titled "Ashirwad" was attended by thousands of devotees.

A group of Naxals were to surrender before him at the satsang. They, however, could not do so due to some unavoidable circumstances, the godman informed devotees.

Expressing grief at the incident of Naxal violence in Garhwa district of Jharkhand, in which about a dozen policemen were killed, he called upon the Naxals to join the society's mainstream. "I am with you," he said.

Perhaps with the recent anti-corruption campaign and related developments at the back of his mind, the spiritual guru said that a strong law cannot remove corruption, and suggested a way to end all corruption. "Law is the cure of a disease (corruption). But spirituality does not allow any disease to exist," he said and made all the devotees present to take a pledge not to accept and give bribes.

"A ruler cannot be a reformer, and a reformer cannot be a ruler," Sri Sri said adding, however, that the ruler should take advice from the reformer.

Earlier, the spiritual guru was welcomed at the satsang by deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi, chairman of the Bihar legislative council Tara Kant Jha and speaker of Bihar legislative assembly Uday Narayan Chaudhary.

Appreciating Bihar's development, Sri Sri said: "A lot has been done. But a lot also remains to be done. Biharis are very resilient. You have come here through many challenges. Don't lose your resilience." He also made the devotees to take a pledge to keep the city clean.

He asked every devotee to contribute in keeping the city clean by giving just two hours of physical labour every month. "Many cities have done it successfully. You should follow suit," the devotees were told.

Sri Sri also suggested ways of success to devotees. "You can get what you want if you have pure faith, enduring patience and good discretion."

Meanwhile, a group of over 100 devotees from Taiwan and China also sought blessings of Sri Sri. The foreign nationals joined Sri Sri in chanting mantras and singing devotional songs here.

Answering questions from devotees, Sri Sri said: "The purpose of life should be satisfaction instead of fame, money and power. You should always consult your conscience to make right decisions. You should accept criticism, you should live in the present, you should maintain your mental integrity, you should accept others the way they are and later try to change them."

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar asks Maoists to shun violence

Posted on: Monday, January 23, 2012 | Posted by: Art of Living Universe

 Sun, Jan 22 2012
Art of Living founder and spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Sunday appealed to the Maoists to shun violence and join in the country's development.
"I appeal to the Maoists to say no to violence and join the mainstream," said Ravi Shankar at a public function in the Bihar capital.
The spirtual leader, who visited the Maoist affected Gaya and Aurangabad districts in the last two days, said that the rebels should shun violence and take up social reforms.
Without referring to the killing of 13 policemen by the Maoists in neighbouring Jharkhand's Garhwa district Saturday, Ravi Shankar said that violence affected all.
"There is a need to convince them to join development," he said.

Sri Sri refuses to join Anna's poll campaign

Posted on: Sunday, January 22, 2012 | Posted by: Art of Living Universe

 Jan 22, 2012, Gaya.
Refusing to join the Anna Hazare-Ramdev combine's campaign in the five poll-bound states, Art of Living (AoL) founder Sri Sri Ravishankar proposed to work with the Maoists, provided the rebels shun violence as gun was not the answer to any problem.

The AOL founder said he sympathized with the cause for which extremists were fighting, but disapproved the means adopted by them to achieve an otherwise laudable goal. He was interacting with the media at the Dalmia dharmshala here on Friday evening.

Asked whether he would be joining Team Anna and Baba Ramdev in their campaign in the five poll-bound states, Sri Sri Ravishankar categorically said that he would not. However, he would like the voters to come out in full strength and vote for better candidates in these elections. On whether he approved the manner in which Baba Ramdev escaped from the Ramlila ground, he said that he was not interested in specifics and his broad concern was elimination of corruption.

Asked about the apparent erosion in the credibility of godmen, Sri Sri said there were good people and bad people everywhere, including the spiritual arena. In a somewhat lighter vein, the holy man said that he considered everybody to be a godman as God was present everywhere.

To a question why he lambasted bribe seekers but remained silent on the misdeeds of food adulterators, tax evaders, hoarders and black marketeers, the spiritual guru said that his definition of corruption was comprehensive enough to include all kind of wrong doers within its ambit.

The godman made it clear that whereas his doors were open to all, including the corrupt, when it comes to donations, he was very particular in ensuring that tainted money does not reach him in the form of donations. Explaining his stand, Sri Sri said that he cannot show the door to the corrupt as the corrupt people need spiritual therapy to get rid of corrupting instincts. Can a doctor close the door on patients? asked Ravishankar.

In his preliminary remarks, he said that though changes have taken place in Bihar, much needs to be done to effectively market the state in the international tourist-pilgrimage circuit.

Sri Sri hails good governance in state

 TOI, Jan 21, 2012.
GAYA: Art of Living (AOL) founder Sri Sri Ravishankar on Friday evening praised the state government and said the present situation is better than the one prevailing a few years back.

Visiting Gaya after a gap of nearly 12 years, he said with all-round peace and prosperity, Bihar is a changed place now. During his previous visit, he was cautioned against moving out openly. But now there is peace and order everywhere in the state.

Addressing his followers at Gaya Gandhi Maidan, he exhorted them to take a vow neither to give nor take bribe. He favoured collective action against the corrupt.

Besides praising good governance and pledge against corruption, Sri Sri also honoured former Maoist N K Singh who renounced the gun to join the Art of Living. He presented a shawl and memento to the former Maoist. He also honoured several other achievers, including Sarvodaya activist Dwarko Sundarani, "tree man" Sikandar and "mobile teacher" Vishwanath Vishwakarma.

Announcing the opening of an employment bureau in Gaya, he said there is demand for yoga teachers across the world and he has contacts in 152 countries of the world where employment opportunities for the unemployed exist. Coming down heavily on alcoholism, he said that liquor consumption in the country is growing at a very fast pace which did not augur well for the country's youth. Liquor consumption in the country has registered a three-fold increase in the last few months, he said, favouring total prohibition for the general welfare of the people. He also gave several tips to get rid of pain and agony and attain happiness.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar to address AOL volunteers in Ahmedabad

Posted on: Thursday, January 19, 2012 | Posted by: Art of Living Universe

DNA India|Ahmedabad|Jan 19, 2012: Art of Living, Gujarat will be welcoming Sri Sri Ravi Shankar to Ahmedabad on February 8. The founder of Art of Living will be addressing the volunteers of the organisation in a convention called ‘Volunteer for better India.’

The convention will address the issue of how the volunteers can contribute to Indian society. Sri Sri Ravishankar will direct volunteers on how to make the country a better place to live by making society stress free, healthy, happy, corruption free and environment friendly. Ahmedabad has more than 1.5 lakh people who have participated in the Art of Living courses. The convention will be mobilising these volunteers. Sri Sri Ravishankar will be providing a direction to the volunteers who have earlier participated in Sudarshan Kriya (part one course of the Art of Living breathing exercises).

Nilesh Desai, president of the Art of Living, Gujarat commented that the convention will be empowering the volunteers as they too need motivation. The volunteers will be given smart cards to identify themselves and will be involved in many projects.

Art of Living emphasises how people can be happy, through their mind, body and soul. Vivek Sharma, Ahmedabad teachers’ coordinator said that through the course, the participants learn to improve their inner strength. That enables them to take responsibility.

Art of Living, Gujarat also announced the next breathing exercises workshop was to take off on January 17. Already over 5000 people have participated in the workshops. On the importance of Sudarshan Kriya, Dr Neelam Raval, Ahmedabad teachers’ coordinator said, “We need to do a cleansing process within ourselves. In sleep we get rid of fatigue, but the deeper stresses remain in our body. Sudarshan Kriya cleanses the system from the inside. The breath has a great secret to offer.”

Creative impulse: Sri Sri

Posted on: Tuesday, January 10, 2012 | Posted by: Art of Living Universe

 DNA, 10th Jan 2012.
It is very important for us to probe into the source of thought. Often we are called great thinkers, but what is a thought? Where does it originate? Is there any way that we can improve the thought process? What is the source of creativity?

Thought is nothing but an impulse of energy and intelligence. That impulse of energy and intelligence, for it to arise and a correct thought to come, you need 16 impulses to meet at a point in the cerebral cortex at a certain speed. In that short interval of time, all the 16 impulses in the cerebral cortex, when they meet, is what we call a correct thought. What do we do about it? We need to train our brain, our mind.

There is always dialogue going on in your own mind. We all have a filter in our mind through which we listen and we accept only what we already know. Something which doesn’t already fall within our belief system, we straightaway filter out. This tendency in the mind to take things which it already knows and reject that which it doesn’t know, is one of the main blocks of creativity.

Sri Sri urges Kashmiri Pandit community to return to Valley

The Bhagavad Gita

Terrorists are cowards. Whenever terror has struck in any part of the world, we have heard people say that it is an act of cowardice. A coward runs away from action but harbors all negative feelings and does it surreptitiously.

This is exactly what happened to Arjuna. Arjuna was angry, upset, sad and wanted to run away. In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna said not to be a coward. So, it is an antidote to terrorism. Lord Krishna said, "Bravery is the way -- face the war when it is inevitable and do your duty."

A terrorist is stuck in his identity. He hides it -- has no rationale and inflicts pain. Whereas Bhagavad Gita helps one transcend one's identity, encourages reason and infuses wisdom. In this sense, it could be called the antidote to terrorism.

Why am I here?

Posted on: Tuesday, January 3, 2012 | Posted by: Art of Living Universe

 DNA, 3rd Jan 2012.
Certain questions indicate the maturity of our mind. They are: What is life? What is the purpose of my life? Why am I here? What do I want?

These questions are vital. Where am I? Are you aware you are on this planet Earth? Have you ever thought “I am on planet Earth and this planet is in the solar system”? So, I am in the solar system. The solar system is just a dot in the Milky Way. So, I am in the Milky Way. This expansion of awareness to the macrocosm and being aware of where you are in this body is important. Just sit with your eyes closed and ask yourself “where am I in this body”? Am I in the head, in the nose, in the heart? Where am I in the body?

Then the sharpness of the mind happens, awareness happens. You are able to perceive that you are nowhere and you are everywhere in the body. A shift in the quality of awareness happens instantaneously. And it is this awareness that can eliminate stresses and sorrows from life. This awareness is called wisdom.
